How we measure

TallestHotels.com ranks 176 hotels worldwide, plus the 44 tallest hotels in Florida, by one question: how high can you actually sleep? Here's how the numbers are put together.

The three measurements

Highest room
The estimated height of the highest guest room: its floor number multiplied by the building's average floor height (architectural height divided by floor count), with spires and crowns excluded. It's the main ranking, and it's accurate to within a few floors.
Top room floor
The highest floor with guest rooms, as numbered by the building. Some towers skip floor numbers, so this doesn't always track height.
Building height
The tower's architectural height, including spires but not antennas, from CTBUH, Wikipedia or the developer. A value marked with ~ is an estimate.

What's included

The world index covers dedicated hotel towers and hotels on the upper floors of mixed-use skyscrapers. Hotels confined to the lower half of a much taller tower, like the Armani Hotel in Burj Khalifa, are left out, because their rooms aren't high up. Serviced apartments count when they're run as a hotel.

Floor ranges show which floors the hotel occupies; a leading ~ means the range is estimated. Where a hotel has floors above its highest guest room (sky lobbies, restaurants, bars), the floor range says so, for example “84–120, rooms to 98”.

Nightly prices are rough typical rates for a standard room in US dollars, meant for comparison only. Live rates vary a lot by season, so always check before booking.

Sources and photos

Heights and floor counts come from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), Wikipedia and the hotels and developers themselves. Hotel descriptions are written from those sources and the hotels' own websites.

Most building photos come from Wikimedia Commons and are credited on each hotel page with the photographer and licence. Where no free photo exists, we use a photo from the hotel or a travel site, credited with a link to the source.
